The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.  Luke 11:34

The Single Eye

There are two places in the scriptures that tell us to have a single eye. One is in Matthew 6:18-25, and the context is serving one master. We cannot serve God and mammon (an Aramaic word that means riches). The thought is that one cannot trust in riches as being steadfast, or trustworthy. There can only be One that we love enough to serve. He is trustworthy, and we must make a choice.

Serving riches may bring a certain amount of satisfaction in this life, but it cannot be relied upon to bring true happiness, or to be steadfast. Many are finding out that their riches are vanishing, but God’s promises never fail. He is steadfast. He is trustworthy. He will supply what we need, and in the end of life, He will bring you into His banqueting house.

In Luke 11:33-36, the single eye is in the context of how we show the light to others. If we have a single eye, and do not hide it under a bushel, others will see what we are bringing to light. Jesus is the light of this world. It is our job to spread light. Spreading light will be the means to bring others to His banqueting house. Soon, we shall be called up. Christians will then be fitted with the wedding garment, and then the wedding will take place.

Is your eye single? Is Christ becoming more visible to your faith, or has the darkness of this world’s sin obscured His glory from your sight? The hymn writer has put it well:

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face.
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.

(Isaiah 60:18-19)
