We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old. … I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me. But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us. In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.  Psalm 44:1 & 6-8

Trusting Jesus

There is a hymn, written by Ira Sankey, that goes like this:

Simply trusting every day, Trusting through the stormy way;
Even when my faith is small, Trusting Jesus that is all.
Trusting Him while life shall last, Trusting Him till earth be past;
Till within the jasper wall: Trusting Jesus that is all.

Surely this hymn should be the expression of our faith. The Psalmist knew the history of his people. He heard with his own ears the great things God had done for the children of Israel. For that reason, he could say that he would not trust in his bow, or in his sword. While God had taught “his hands to war, and his fingers to fight” (Psalm 144:1) his trust was not in his expertise. It was in the LORD Who protected him and gave him the victory.

That is true for us, as well. It is the LORD Who watches over us night and day. No matter what we are going through, the Lord is providing for us, and bringing us through to the other side. Our responsibility is just to trust Him through our trials. When we are “within the jasper wall”, we will then understand what He was accomplishing in our lives. Like the tapestry that we look at from the back side, it doesn’t make any sense; but when we get on the other side, we see the beautiful work of the artist. That is what God is doing in our lives. It is up to us to be “simply trusting every day”.

(Psalm 19:1-3)
